Hubby has been a diligent hunter and gather this season, therefore the Lord has blessed our family this year. We have some yummy, healthy venison meat now being added to our deep freezer.
In honor of ground venison sausage, I made my first batch of Sausage Gravy, using this delicious treat!
Now, I know that not everyone has, likes, or would even consider using venison sausage, so it is totally fine to use ANY sausage that you have on hand for this recipe!
Here is what you need to get started on this fantastic (and fairly easy) filling breakfast, lunch or dinner meal.
Ingredients
1 pound of venison sausage (or 12 oz package of sausage of your choosing)
3 tablespoons of butter
1/2 cup all purpose flour
3 cups milk
salt and pepper to taste
Directions
Step 1. Heat your large skillet and add your sausage, breaking it up to cook it over medium-high heat. Cook your sausage until it is evenly browned. Remove the sausage from the skillet with a slotted spoon keeping the fat drippings in the skillet. Set your sausage aside for later use.
Step 2. Add the butter to the skillet and whisk until melted. Add the flour and whisk until completely blended and smooth. Reduce the heat to medium and cook until it is light brown (you are slightly burning the flour). Gradually add in your milk, whisking to blend well and then cook until the mixture has thickened a bit. Reduce the heat to low and now add your sausage back in. Cook for an additional 10-15 minutes while the gravy thickens. If the gravy becomes too thick, add a little bit more milk to thin it back out.
Step 3. Serve while hot over homemade biscuits, toast or eggs. This makes about 6 servings. Enjoy!
Many blessings today and everyday,
Callie
