Recently the children and I were given a product that was exactly what this family needed. A gentle and gracious reminder about virtues. Thanks to We Choose Virtues that sent us their Parenting Cards.
This set of 12 double sided cards are absolutely an ingenious idea and are part of the Homeschool Kit.
What better way to help my children learn about virtues. Most people seem to have even forgotten what the word means….
virtue: (noun)
1) moral excellence; goodness; righteousness
2) conformity of one’s life and conduct to moral and ethical principles
3) chastity; virginity
4) a particular moral excellence
5) a or admirable quality of property
The original word is derived from the Greek and French in regards to men and their virility; traits of a “good” man.
Luckily the Bible also talks about virtues and just how very important they are.
Our cards are 8 1/2 inches by 5 1/2 inches and are so beautiful in their designs. The characters used are unique and so cute (as a mama they were spot on for being children). Each card represents one of the twelve virtues that are being taught.
- Obedient
- Content
- Attentive
- Perseverant
- Gentle
- Kind
- Forgiving
- Helpful
- Honest
- Diligent
- Patient
- Self-Controlled
The thing that I liked about this set of cards is that each card had a little saying on it that was easy to remember and was well written. The one saying that was the most used in our house was, “OK, whatever you say, I will obey, right away.” Honestly, this was one of the hardest virtue for the children to “get”. Being obedient is just not a thing that comes easily or naturally with children. My children especially are extremely hardheaded (lol, I have absolutely NO idea where that comes from either!). So this was also the first cards we used and came back to the most.
Each card is filled with information. The front has the cute little boy or little girl, the virtue that is being discussed, the short phrase the goes along with the virtue, the explanation of what you are NOT supposed to do (be argumentative, unwilling or slow, not refusing to do as you are told – for the Obedient card), and then there is a Bible verse that goes along with each virtue as well on the bottom.
The back of each card has a challenge, a section that speaks of the why and how to use the virtue, what to say after you say, “I’m sorry” and teachable moments for Insert Virtue Families.
We Choose Virtues offers this incredible set of cards in 3 styles:
- NIrV – New International readers Version which has both Old and New Testament verses on the cards.
- King James Version which only has Old Testament verses.
- Spanish
We reviewed the NIrV set and loved them. They are easy to read, understand and implement. We used them almost daily. I would choose one card and we would read over the front and discuss the sections on the back of the card. The younger children would color a page for when we chose a new virtue to discuss. Then through out the day, when I would “catch” one of the children showing or not showing that virtue it was brought to their attention. I would then repeat the short saying on the front of the card and remind them that this is a good thing to make a part of their day to day activities.
This worked well with my children. My youngest, Joseph is 6 1/5, my daughter Ana is 9 1/5 and my oldest, Isaiah is just 13 years old and they all took to repeating the phrase on the front of the card rather quickly. The site recommends that this set of virtue cards be used for early childhood development through elementary (or 3-11 year olds) and the cost is $38.49 for this entire set. My oldest was a bit skeptical at first and laughed at the intent of this product but he jumped right on board once we really talked about the why’s of making these virtues more evident in our lives.
The vendor also sent us their WCV Download Bundle that cost $7.99 that had some awesome items in it that went right along with our cards. In this bundle of goodies the following was supplied:
Kids of VirtueVille Coloring Book (PDF Download)
Family Character Assessment (PDF Download)
Teacher’s Handbook (PDF Download)
Butterfly Awards for Kids (PDF Download)
My favorite download was the Teacher’s Handbook, it was a wonderful tool for me to guide me in the usage of the cards. The favorite item from the downloads for Joseph and Ana was the coloring book, my children seriously love to color! The Butterfly awards were a nice touch to give out to the children as they made extra efforts to show the virtues through out the days/weeks of using this product.
Overall, this product is one that makes me happy in the ease of use and the wonderful part it now plays in the lives of me and my children. It wasn’t just used with the children, I too was always reminded when I stepped out and needed to show “my’ virtues to others. It was a gentle and loving way to be corrected for unsavory behavior that I surely do not want to see in my children. A straight up A+ for the ingenuity of this product and how wonderful and easy it is to use with my children.
