Handwriting class is not a favorite among my children. It was never mine either, they come by it honestly. So when I had the chance to review Homeschool Copywork, and be blessed with a Lifetime Membership, I knew I had hit the jackpot! Amy Blevins (the owner and creator of Homeschool Copywork) is one cool homeschool mama. The site is amazing, seriously amazing.
Homeschool Copywork
Copywork is the fun part of school. Ya know, the practicing of your penmanship. Because every one needs to practice their penmanship, I don’t care who you are. That is where this course comes into play.
Amy has spend copious amounts of time into creating printables that cover a multitude of bases. Each printable is in a set revolving around a particular topic. On each sheet, there is a phrase or Bible verse that can be copied onto the lines available. There is also an image that can be colored, if the student would like to color it.
There are three groups of ages to pick from:
- Early Elementary – short sentences best for preschool through first grade
- Upper Elementary – 2-3 sentences best for 2nd-5th grades, some cursive practice
- Middle through High School – longer works to copy best suited for higher grades
Here are just a few of the topics that have been turned into amazing printable sets:
Early Elementary
- Animal Alphabet
- Transportation
- Dragons of the Bible
- Autumn in the Garden
Upper Elementary
- Looking Upward: Quotes by Charlotte Bronte
- 1 Corinthians 13 (cursive only)
- The Poems of Emily Dickinson
- Character Building (Bible verses)
Middle – High School
- Claude Monte Artist Study
- Courage Aways Rises: Quotes from Jane Austen
- Star Spangled Banner
- Vincent van Gogh Artist Study (5 volumes)
There are so many more than the few examples that I have listed. This site is amazingly full of great written works as well as Bible verses wrapped around fun subjects. As you can see from above, it is NOT just for practicing penmanship, it is an incredible addition to any classroom. There various sets are laden with interesting and some times thought provoking works.
How This Worked for Us
I chose to have Joseph and Ana both work on some of these awesome printable sets of copywork.
Joseph was chosen to use the Transportation set from the Early Elementary section. He is still in desperate need of practice for his penmanship. This set was the perfect way for him to get in some much needed practice as well as give him the opportunity to enjoy the drawing an coloring that goes with the copywork.
With Joseph still needing much penmanship practice, this set seemed the most on his level. It was easy enough that he didn’t get frustrated but allowed him to use his best penmanship. There was marked improvement from when he started using the copywork to when he finished the set. I am quite pleased.
He worked hard at making sure his letters were all correct and written to the best of his ability. By far though, his favorite part was the coloring (or shading) that he got to do. He also used the mirror image onto back side of the paper to create his own images to color on new papers. He had way more fun with this copywork than I ever thought possible. I am so glad this was considered “fun” than actual work!
I had Ana using the The Greatest of These 1 Corinthians 13 copywork. This is a cursive only set, which I loved! Ana always wants to improve on her cursive, but ultimately dislikes having to actually practice. I love reviews that makes them work, because I often see the benefits that they do not.
The picture above was taken just the other day. You can see the time and effort she is taking. Which is evident from the one I am about to show you.
The above is done, but not done “well”. Check out the amazing improvement after just a few days of diligence.
Oh my Word! So much neater!
This just goes to show that with practice, any thing can and will be improved.
I love Homeschool Copywork and I will be printing off many, many more of these incredible sets. They really do work, and the kids love that after they complete a page, they can take time to color the images that go along with what they have just written.
