When it comes to reading and teaching reading I have to admit that I need a bit of help from people that know a lot more than I do. This is why I am grateful for people like the company Reading Eggs, that offered to let me and Joseph review their online learning product that helps with reading for a time.

Reading Eggs

This is an online reading program that covers many levels of learning. The program is for brand new readers (Reading Eggs Junior), fledgling readers and struggling readers (Reading Eggs), and proficient readers (Reading Eggspress).

The comprehensive reading program is grounded in solid educational research and covers the five pillars of reading – phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency.

Each child will take a placement test to see how much they know about reading, phonics, and letter recognition. Once the child has been given a “map” or place to start in the course, then the program has numerous levels of learning available.

  • Spelling
  • Phonics
  • Reading
  • Matching
  • Sentence structure
  • Worksheets
  • Having stories read aloud to the student

Here is a deeper look into the program that Joseph used:

My Lessons – in this section of the program there are 120 lessons that need to be completed

Storylands – in this section of the program there are 20 lessons that mainly focus on reading development, practicing vocabulary, and reading comprehension skills. Included in this section there are 20 books to be read and special rewards to be earned.

Spelling – in this section of the program there are 96 lessons that test all areas of spelling. There are graded tests in this section to complete.

The Story Factory – students can write their own story in this section and use beautiful illustrations provided to go with their story.

My Program – this section has four books that the students should be able to read on their own at the completion of this program.

As the student progresses through each section they are awarded “eggs”. These eggs act as money in the program allowing the student to buy items for their house.

How This Worked for Us

This was a fun program that Joseph enjoyed. The beginning was a tad difficult as he had to take the placement test and tests are never any fun. But once he got through the placement test he was pleased that he knew as much as he did.

The reading aloud to him was one of his favorite things in the program. I read aloud here at home a lot and he seriously loves hearing stories.

The spelling got easier as he went as he know what to expect from the program. Joseph has really increased in his ability to spelling thanks to this program and his understanding has broadened about how sentences are put together.

The worksheets really helped enforce the lessons and Joseph seemed to enjoy (read that as not hate) completing them.

I personally enjoyed getting the reports from Reading Eggs that showed Joseph’s progress.
