Imagine
Can you imagine the excitement if you were able to go back in time? Well, thanks to Barbour Publishing, in our latest review, we were able to Imagine . . . The Great Flood by Matt Koceich. This is one adventure that you don’t want to miss!
Imagine The Great Flood
This is a story of young Corey, just 10 years old. He lives in Galveston, Tx and just learned that he and his family will be moving to Clearwater. Fl in the next few weeks. This is a move that makes him sad and slightly scared. As he heads to the park one afternoon with his mom and their German Shepherd Molly, they talk about the move. Understanding that God handles everything and that He has a plan is sometimes difficult for people to grasp, young children it sometimes takes even longer.
At the park Corey and his mom are playing fetch with Molly when a storm starts to roll in. Molly runs off and Corey has to go find her in the woods. As he is in the woods, he trips and hits his head. This causes him to black out and when he wakes up he is in 2400 B.C., the time of Noah and when he built the Ark.
The craziness all begins then, with Corey meeting Shem, Ham, Japheth, and ultimately Noah. Corey helps with the animals, leading some to the Ark. The Ark, that Noah built. He battle the giants of the time as well as Elizar (super bad bad guy). Corey doesn’t know how he will overcome all of these issues or if he will ever make his way back home to present day.
In Corey’s adventure he learns to rely on God and begins to better understand how God has everything under control. A hard lesson to learn at any age!
What We Thought
I had Ana read this story for us to give a kids point of view review this time. She enjoyed it and was able to read it fairly quickly. The text is a bit larger for younger readers (geared toward 8-12 year old adventures) and she had no issues understanding any of the words in the story.
She was impressed with the animal descriptions and as she is an animal lover this was absolutely her favorite part of the story. Since she is almost 13 it did not take her very long to grasp that this was a dream, for lack of a better term. I think she was expecting real time travel or something when she began reading the story.
Ana did say that she liked how Corey was able to understand the importance of relying on God in times of trouble once his adventure came to an end.
As the mom, I was pleased that Corey found some deeper meaning to his adventure too. In the grand scheme of things, it is incredibly difficult to grasp how God is in control, sometime even as an adult. So I appreciate that the author was able to bring this notion down to a young readers level.
I look forward to reading this aloud to Joseph, as I feel like this might actually be more his level of interest. I look forward to picking up this book for later reading with Joseph.
