PARENTING BEYOND THE RULES
Parenting Beyond the Rules is a MUST read book for mamas! I am in the midst of raising teens and honestly, I thought I had a good a handle on this parenting teens gig. Alas, I could not have been more off-base. I began this book with a heart of “I already know what I’m doing” but I quickly realized that I was wrong on so many levels.
Connie Albers shares in this book that raising teens is one of our most delicate, and harrowing, but important times in our kids lives. I was so impressed with the way Connie encourages parents in this book. I never once felt like she was talking down to me as a parent, I always felt like she was right there with me, holding my hand and giving patient, loving encouragement.
I have learned that truly listening to your teen looks much different than what I thought. And that teens must be “heard” even when we as parents disagree with their ideas. Ultimately, I’ve learned to “shut up and listen”. Pouring into a receptive heart is much easier than trying to repair a hard or broken heart. I’ve learned some hard truths about myself as a mama too, some are hard to swallow but these truths have helped me bridge gaps and to try again.
From a Christian perspective, Connie shows parents the grace and acceptance that we need so that we in turn can offer that same thing to our teens. Raising teens in this crazy world is hard, beyond anything I thought imaginable way back when I had little people. But this book does my mama heart good. Pick up this book today, I promise you won’t regret it.
